Formula and variables

component amount = percent / 100 × final amount

  • w/v means grams per 100 mL final solution.
  • v/v means mL per 100 mL final solution.
  • w/w means grams per 100 g final mixture.

Worked example

Example: 500 mL of 50% v/v glycerol

Use the v/v basis, 50%, and a final volume of 500 mL.

0.50 × 500 mL = 250 mL glycerol; then bring to 500 mL final volume

Why results may differ

  • Final volume is not starting solvent volume.
  • v/v does not model volume contraction on mixing.
  • w/v, v/v, and w/w are not converted into one another automatically.

Common questions

What do w/v, v/v, and w/w mean?

They use different numerator and denominator dimensions: mass/volume, volume/volume, and mass/mass.

Is final volume the same as solvent volume?

No. It is the total solution volume after the component is added and the mixture is brought to volume.
