What this calculator solves

Select only scientifically reviewed buffer presets and scale each stock or component amount to a target final volume.

Scientific review date: 2026-09-16

Formula and variables

component amount = reviewed baseline amount × target final amount / baseline final amount

  • Component forms and stock concentrations are fixed reviewed data.
  • Only final amount is scaled; pH adjustment quantity is not calculated.
  • Instruction notes are preserved and never converted into numbers.

Worked example

Example: 500 mL of 1× TE buffer pH 8.0

Use 1 M Tris-HCl pH 8.0 stock and 0.5 M EDTA pH 8.0 stock.

5.0 mL Tris-HCl stock + 1.0 mL EDTA stock; bring to 500 mL with water

Supported modes

reviewed buffer recipe

Scientifically reviewed presets

Why results may differ

  • The calculator does not predict or adjust final pH.
  • Do not substitute a different salt, hydrate, or stock form.
  • Follow the applicable SOP for sterilization, storage, and suitability.

Common questions

Can I scale a reviewed TE buffer recipe?

Yes. Keep the reviewed preset unchanged and scale its stock amounts proportionally to final volume.

Does the calculator determine final pH?

No. The displayed pH identifies the preset; actual pH adjustment and verification remain separate procedures.
