By directly injecting stem cells derived from the placenta into the fetus, it appears that spine bifida surgery, which has been challenging, can be made safer. Although it is a phase 1 clinical trial and the sample size is small, it has proceeded without major side effects. This method may offer new hope for children with spina bifida in the future.
