When Others’ Words Bring Me Down, Practicing Returning to My Own Side

If you are exhausted from trying to resolve every misunderstanding and be a good person to everyone, it is okay to step back from others’ evaluations for a while and turn your attention toward caring for yourself.

Other People’s Words Are Not the Whole Story

When someone misunderstands or speaks ill of me, or judges me differently from what I expected, I may feel deeply shaken. Especially after spending a long time in a busy and competitive environment, holding myself back and giving in can begin to feel like diligence. But the fact that someone else’s words hurt me and the idea that those words determine my entire identity are two different things.

I do not need to become someone who is never hurt. However, even after being hurt, I can choose not to hand over the entire center of my life to those words.

Caring for Myself First Is Not Selfish

One important direction introduced in the conversation was “caring for myself first.” Caring for myself does not mean turning away from others; it can become the foundation that allows me to sustain relationships with the strength I have left. It is difficult to protect myself or my relationships for long through constant sacrifice and endurance alone.

So today, I do not have to persuade anyone, explain myself, or pretend that everything is fine. Pausing for a moment and first asking, “What state am I in right now?” may be enough.

Practicing Being on My Own Side Without Conditions

It was said that self-love is not about acknowledging myself only after I have become a better version of myself. It begins with accepting and respecting who I am now, including my shortcomings and weaknesses. An attitude of being on my own side only when I have done well can easily become another form of judgment.

Even briefly, I can write down today’s emotions and stress level, or think of three things I am grateful for. This is not an assignment to force myself to be positive, but a small space to check in again with my own state, which had been obscured by other people’s views.

Moving Toward Building Pillars in My Life

It can be upsetting when someone dislikes me or speaks inaccurately about me. I do not have to try to eliminate that feeling. However, if I can continue choosing what I want to do, what cares for me, and what aligns with my values, the power of other people’s words to shake my entire life may begin to change.

Today, it is enough to set just one boundary: not responding immediately, stopping unnecessary explanations, or not giving up my time to rest. Even a small and quiet choice can become a direction that says, “I will not abandon myself.” Before a life in which everyone understands me, I need a life in which I can return to my own side even in difficult moments.
