A Time to Reconsider the Direction of My Life

If your heart still feels empty after rushing through life, you can pause for a while and quietly look at the kind of life you truly want.

For quite a long time, we live by reading other people's expectations. We learn what earns praise and what kind of person we must be to be loved, then shape ourselves to fit those standards. In childhood, this may have been a way to find belonging and safety.

But if we continue following only those standards as time passes, what we truly want can gradually become unclear. If, despite working hard, you are left with barely a sense of relief rather than joy or fulfillment, it may not be because you are lacking. You may simply not have had enough time to check whether you are moving in the direction that is right for you.

Separating What I Want from What Others Expect of Me

Is what you are chasing now truly your own desire? Or are you running because everyone else is chasing it too? This question is not a test that demands an immediate answer. It is an opportunity to pause and look at the standards that have guided your life until now.

When you imagine the final scene of your life, unexpectedly important things may quietly come to mind. Think about what kind of photographs you would want to remain, who you would want beside you, and what words you would want to hear. That scene may reveal not grand achievements, but the people you shared your life with, the traces you left behind, and the emotions you want to feel more often.

A Direction That Allows You to Move Slowly

For some people, a life of writing, studying what they love, and helping others may come to mind. For others, reconciliation with family or doing what brings them joy may feel more important. There is no single right answer.

You do not need to change everything today. You can simply let go of one standard, share your honest feelings with one person, or spend a little longer looking at what matters to you. It is okay to move slowly without feeling chased. The direction of your life may become clear not all at once, but through repeated small choices that reflect what you value.

This does not mean that all the time you have lived so far belonged to someone else's life. At that time, you had reasons to follow those standards. Now it is time to ask yourself again whether you will continue with them as they are or adjust them slightly toward a direction that suits you.
