Background

EMA has designated June as Pride Month and is expanding Diversity & Inclusion activities across Europe. Historically, regulator‑led events focused primarily on scientific policy, but this initiative emphasizes social inclusion. It represents a strategic effort to create an environment where patients and researchers can participate without discrimination.

Purpose

Running over two months, the event aims to promote equity in the scientific and health sectors. EMA seeks to provide a platform that enables scientists from diverse backgrounds to voice their perspectives and collaborate. This approach increases the likelihood that innovative research ideas will emerge from a diverse pool of talent.

Patient Organization Participation

During the event, representatives from patient organizations will accompany EMA officials on a dedicated forum. EURORDIS (Rare Diseases Europe) and the European AIDS Treatment Group (EATG) will present their viewpoints directly and take part in policy discussions. Involvement of patient groups serves as a critical bridge, ensuring that real‑world treatment needs are reflected in regulatory policies.

Expected Impact

Strengthening a culture of diversity and inclusion is expected to lead to more inclusive clinical trial designs during the R&D phase. Collaboration with patient organizations can also accelerate the development of novel therapeutic approaches for rare diseases and infectious diseases.
