Epidemiology and Infectivity Study of Hepatitis C Virus Infection

Study Objective
This study aims to define the infectivity, transmission routes, and evidence of liver disease in Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) infected individuals, focusing on antibody-positive blood donors. Given that most infected individuals are asymptomatic and have low awareness of their condition, the study seeks to provide evidence for managing infected individuals and informing public health policies to mitigate the ongoing risk of transmission.
Study Design
The study is an observational cohort that began on March 15, 1991, and has been completed. Participants provided an initial blood sample of 100 ml during their first visit, followed by additional 50 ml samples at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. Some participants may have additional plasma collected through plasmapheresis. These repeated collections are designed to track changes in viral load and immune response over time.
Key Measurements
HCV RNA levels, liver enzyme ALT, and immune responses are measured from blood samples. The study also investigates the socio-economic background and sexual behavior of infected individuals to identify transmission routes and risk factors.
