I Am the One Who Keeps My Boundaries

You may not be able to reclaim all your autonomy at once, but you can still set small standards that protect your time and mind.

In a place where you cannot change everything

At work, there are moments when it is difficult to move with as much autonomy as you want. You may not be given meaningful work at the beginning, and sometimes you have to do tasks that seem far from your training or dreams. Feeling frustrated in that reality is not strange. Acknowledging that no one lives with one hundred percent autonomy can itself be a first step.

Accepting reality does not mean giving away all your time

Recognizing reality does not mean answering every demand. The transcript describes the time between leaving work and returning the next day as your time. Being reachable late into the night does not automatically make life better. If you cannot cut everything off today, simply deciding when you are available to respond can be enough for now.

Boundaries become known through repetition

You do not need a grand declaration. You can stop checking your phone after a set hour or leave a brief message saying you will reply tomorrow. People learn your limits through repeatedly experiencing when you respond. Someone may be displeased, but that reaction is not proof that you have done something wrong.

Respectful, and still firm

If the other person finds it difficult to accept, you can explain calmly: “I turn off my phone late at night because I need to sleep.” It is a way of stating your position clearly without a long defense. There may also be moments when speaking immediately is not safe or possible. Remaining quiet while you assess the situation can be self-protection.

One thing you can keep today

Please do not blame yourself for failing to set a perfect boundary. It is difficult to protect everything and satisfy everyone. Instead, leave yourself one small choice today: turn off notifications for an hour after work, or do not open a message that can wait until tomorrow. Your boundary does not need to wait for someone else’s permission; you can teach it gradually, wherever you have room to do so.
