Definition

Solution dilution calculator — Apply the relation C₁V₁ = C₂V₂ between concentration (C) and volume (V) to calculate how much stock solution and diluent you need to reach a target concentration and volume.

Purpose

(1) Dilute stock solutions to working concentration (e.g., 100 mM Tris stock → 10 mM working buffer) (2) Create standard curves via serial dilution (3) Adjust reagent and antibiotic concentrations in cell culture (4) Prepare standards for Western blot, qPCR, IHC and other quantitative assays

How to Use

Enter any 3 of the 4 values and the remaining one is auto-calculated: ① C₁ (Stock concentration) ② V₁ (Volume of stock to take) ③ C₂ (Target concentration) ④ V₂ (Final volume) Most common use: know ①③④, solve for ② (how much stock to pipette). Units only need to match on each side — mM/mM, µg/mL ÷ µg/mL all work.

Examples

Example 1) Make 10 mL of 100 mM working buffer from 1 M NaCl stock → C₁=1000 mM, V₁=?, C₂=100 mM, V₂=10 mL → V₁ = (100 × 10) / 1000 = 1 mL → 1 mL stock + 9 mL water Example 2) Make 50 µL of 1 mg/mL BSA from 10 mg/mL BSA stock → V₁ = (1 × 50) / 10 = 5 µL → 5 µL BSA stock + 45 µL buffer
