Emphysema is a form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a chronic lung disease in which the alveolar walls are damaged, making the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide difficult.
Key mechanism
The most common related factor is long-term exposure to tobacco smoke; secondhand smoke, inhaled irritants such as air pollution, chemicals, and dust, and rarely, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency may also be involved.

When the alveolar walls are destroyed, the alveoli lose their elasticity and merge into larger, fewer spaces, thereby reducing the function of exhaling and taking in oxygen.

Representative patterns include dyspnea (shortness of breath) during activity, chronic cough, sputum, wheezing, whistling-like breath sounds, and chest tightness.
