Pneumococcal infection is a category of infectious diseases caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae, which can involve multiple organs.

The causative agent is pneumococcus, and it can be transmitted through contact with a patient or from individuals who carry the bacteria in the nasopharynx without symptoms.
After colonizing the nasopharynx, Streptococcus pneumoniae can spread via respiratory secretions or cause disease by invading the bloodstream, central nervous system, etc.
Infants and young children, those aged 65 or older, individuals with chronic diseases, immunocompromised individuals, smokers, asthma patients, and residents of long-term care facilities may be at higher risk.
Infections can range from mild localized infections to life-threatening invasive infections.
